Five

Rachel was the one who suggested it so Aiden was going to put the blame for this mess firmly at her feet. Because, if they'd gone along with his plan, they'd be sitting happily at John's house and eating Mary's cookies which, in his eyes, were God's gift to the world, while watching a late night action film they could all get behind. Instead of that, he was standing at the bar, nursing a Coke and watching Tristan dance.

"Don't blame me," she said, holding her hands up in her defence, "I wasn't the one who made him do shots."

"You weren't discouraging him, either."

"He's an adult," she said, waving away his concerns. "He's old enough to know what he wants."

It was a fair statement but it didn't make him feel any better about watching Tristan get steadily further down the line from drunk to wasted. They didn't tend to ever get that far, too cautious even in their downtime, and it was another reminder that this man wasn't his brother, not the one who had his back and could hold his own. He'd been getting reminded more and more often recently, even as Tristan started recalling more things, and it left him feeling like he was cast away in a storm: all mixed up and lost.

"You're an adult, too," she said.

"The fact hasn't escaped me," Aiden said dryly.

She rolled her eyes. "What I mean is, you know what you want as well, and if you don't want him dancing with those girls, you should talk to your boyfriend."

"He's not my boyfriend."

"Have you seen the way he looks at you? He is literally one word away from jumping your bones."

He choked on his drink, spluttering. "Rachel! You're in high school."

"The fact hasn't escaped me," she snarked back, no bite in it. "And there's a lot of jumping of bones in high school."

"That's a little bit worrying."

"I'm eighteen, it's okay, and girls mature faster."

"Which doesn't reassure me at all."

She shook her head, ignoring him. "Besides, we were talking about Aiden. And, if you're not careful, that girl's going to jump his bones before you can."

"No one's jumping anyone tonight."

"Tell that to her."

There was a blonde girl plastered to Tristan's front, his hands placed strategically on her hips, and they were swaying in time with the music. To call it dancing would be being generous because dancing required space and, in the packed nightclub, that was a precious commodity. Aiden wasn't worried, though, as Tristan was gay and he figured he couldn't have changed that much so the fact that he was with a girl, here and now, seemed to point more to the fact that he was trying to make someone jealous than anything else and he looked around to see who might be the girl's ex.

He didn't find anyone that fit the criteria but he did catch sight of Callie and Conor, waving them over.

"Hey," Aiden said, tugging Rachel with him. "What is it?"

"Conor feels sick. It's pretty late, too, and I think it's clear that no one's going to score today.
